About

State of Mind Games is a Canberra, Australia, based game design studio focusing on small digital and tabletop games.

It all started back in about 2016 at Savage Yeti Games with a paper prototype for an iPad game for 2 players, but feedback during testing showed that players were more interested in a boardgame than in a digital implementation. We pivoted and a few years later The Stars Align was published by Breaking Games. This was closely followed by the original app implementation of PatchWord, which has since aged off the app store.

PatchWord was originally designed for my partner, and with the coming of Wordle to the world player expectations shifted into an area that now suited a reimplementation of PatchWord, allowing me to take it back closer to my original vision for the game while implementing some new features that players expect from these types of games.

The original PatchWord was made by Savage Yeti Games and the following people:
Myself, Matt Radcliffe, Nick Yapp, and Elowyn McJames.

Current tabletop game prototypes seeking a publisher include:

  • Sanctuary, a 2-player light strategy set collection game about the impact of invasive species on Australian native animals.

  • It’s all mine! - a 2-4 player tile laying game about balancing land use between nature, housing, and mining.

  • Insectiform (working title only) - a 2-4 player kids game based off the old memory card game but with a modern twist.

  • Goal!!! - this is a simple game designed with Khairul for use by Operation Christmas in their gift packs for kids in disadvantaged areas and war zones etc. It had interesting design constraints and I’m proud of what we managed to deliver for a very low per person cost.

  • Dealing Blows - a 2-player game of bluffing and strategy simulating a professional fight. This game was play tested with MMA fighters at a local MMA gym and their feedback rolled into the final product. This fits into a mint tin so it is small and compact. Currently only available for sale from The Game Crafter.

  • Unnamed Soccer Game - using a similar combo mechanic to that in Dealing Blows, this game is aiming to simulate the flow of moving the ball up and down the field as you try to read your opponents moves and intercept the ball so that you can score. The intention is to potentially sell this game and Dealing Blows in the one large mint tin.

  • Of Stone and Wood - this is a 2-player strategy game that is quick to play. Originally designed for a contest on The Game Crafter for a simple yet elegant game it rated well when judged by the other designers and was a semi-finalist in the competition. This game is currently not available to purchase.
